The teenage years can be a confusing and anxious period filled with different transitions, adjustments and emotions. Art psychotherapy can be a support for them at this time, helping them to understand what they are experiencing, to solve problems, increase their self esteem and confidence, build their social skills and to help them to cope with and manage their emotions.

In an art psychotherapy session the focus is on the artmaking, allowing your teenager to express and integrate their difficult feelings in a non-threatening approach without the need for words. In a safe and confidential environment your teenager is invited to express and explore their emotions and thoughts through their creativity. Then at their own pace with their art psychotherapist, they can reflect on and process what they are experiencing. Our overall aim is to develop and create a place of trust where they do not feel judged but listened to, heard, validated and understood.

In art psychotherapy your teenager will enter into a dynamic relationship with their art psychotherapist that helps them make sense of their experiences. To make this possible there is a process, that as parents/carers you will first need to engage in.

How it works

The art psychotherapy process starts with an initial intake meeting between the art psychotherapist and parents/carers of the teenager. The intake meeting gathers information of the teenager’s history, development, and family circumstances. Reasons for referral and other concerns are explored and the art psychotherapy process is explained. This initial meeting allows parents/carers to become familiar with the art psychotherapist and the art psychotherapy space. Based on the information gathered, the art psychotherapist and the parents/carers agree on an initial treatment plan. An informed written consent needs to be given by both parents or other guardians before the sessions can go ahead. Parental review meetings are held on a regular base to discuss progress with the parents/carers.

The first session for your teenager will be an assessment session to meet their art psychotherapist and understand how art psychotherapy works. Art psychotherapy sessions are one to one sessions and an hour long.
